Guided modes in photonic crystal slabs

چکیده
We analyze the properties of two-dimensionally periodic dielectric structures that have a band gap for propagation in a plane and that use index guiding to confine light in the third dimension. Such structures are more amenable to fabrication than photonic crystals with full three-dimensional band gaps, but retain or approximate many of the latter’s desirable properties. We show how traditional band-structure analysis can be adapted to slab systems in the context of several representative structures, and describe the unique features that arise in this framework compared to ordinary photonic crystals. @S0163-1829~99!00832-2#

Guided resonance in Photonic Crystals
The objective of this thesis research is to analyze the guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs. It introduces the different kinds of photonic crystals and focuses on photonic crystal slabs consisting of a square lattice of air holes. The guided resonances are created by the coupling between the guided modes above the light line and radiation modes. Specifically, we calculate the transmissi...
متن کاملDependence of guided resonances on the structural parameters of terahertz photonic crystal slabs
Using terahertz spectroscopy, we measure the normal-incidence transmission coefficient of photonic crystals consisting of a periodic lattice of air holes in a silicon slab. Sharp resonant features are observed in the transmission spectra due to coupling of the leaky photonic crystal modes, called guided resonances, to the continuum of free-space modes. The resonances show considerable sensitivi...
متن کاملCharacterization of guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy
We describe experimental studies of guided resonances in two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs using coherent single-cycle terahertz pulses. Our measurements directly reveal two stages of pulse transmission in the time domain: an initial pulse resulting from the direct transmission through the photonic crystal slab and a long-lived decaying tail resulting from the finite lifetime of guided res...
متن کاملBand Structure Measurements and Calculations of Epitaxially Grown GaN Based Photonic Crystal Slabs with Semipolar Quantum Wells
We report on the large area realization of GaN photonic crystal slabs with semipolar InGaN quantum wells (QWs) using laser interference lithography and selective area metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Directional extraction of guided modes was observed in angle-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy (ARPL), and the photonic crystal slab dispersion relation was measured. A comparison o...
متن کاملGap maps, diffraction losses, and exciton–polaritons in photonic crystal slabs
A theory of photonic crystal (PhC) slabs is described, which relies on an expansion in the basis of guided modes of an effective homogeneous waveguide and on treating the coupling to radiative modes and the resulting losses by perturbation theory. The following applications are discussed for the case of a high-index membrane: gap maps for photonic lattices in a waveguide; exciton–polariton stat...
متن کامل'Hexagon-type' photonic crystal slabs based on SOI
In this paper we discuss the design of a novel category of photonic crystal slabs (PCS) and as an example, we consider structures based on SOI wafers. Fabrication issues related to lithographic accuracy are addressed, too. The geometry consists in a triangular lattice of hexagons having their symmetry axes rotated with respect to the lattice. We show that the mirror-symmetric 'hexagon-type' PCS ...
